Discover the molecular mechanisms of living organisms in order to understand how their dysfunctions trigger pathologies.

Pedagogy

  • AIMS

Biological processes are inherently complex and can only be effectively studied through an integrated and multidisciplinary approach. Although diverse, the various disciplines of basic and medical biology (developmental biology, neurobiology, cancerology...) are based on common concepts and can be studied through complementary technologies (model organisms, genome editing, omics, physiological measurements , behavioral, imaging...). The Master BIP is aimed at training high-level biologists by providing them with an extensive base of knowledge and skills in the fields of molecular biology, genetics, developmental biology, neurobiology and stem cells, while promoting training at the interface between disciplines and raising students' awareness of putative biomedical applications. The internships in the laboratory will allow the students to specialize in one of the main axes of the Master.

  • TARGETED STUDENTS

The candidates are requested to have obtained a bachelor in biology with knowledge in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, physiology. It is essential that the students has previously followed teaching unit that allowed them to appreciate the mechanistic bases of biological processes.

  • STRUCTURE AND ORGANISATION

Master students will have two rotations in research laboratories, one in M1 (6 weeks) and one in M2 (6 months).

  • KNOWLEDGE TO BE ACQUIRED

    • Have a deep knowledge of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that control the fundamental biological processes, with an emphasis on the disciplinary fields of the master (Developmental Biology, Stem Cells, Neurogenesis, Cancerogenesis, Physiology...)
    • Understand how deregulation of these processes leads to the development of pathologies such as cancers, neurodevelopmental disorders, metabolic pathologies ; and to appreciate how recent developments in basic and applied research represent a promising avenue for genetic, molecular, cellular and pharmacological therapies.
    • Be aware of the power of model organisms to study basic biological processes, and master the molecular biology, genetic, genome editing, cell and tissue imaging technologies that can be used in these organisms to understand a given biological process.
    • Acquire a knowledge of Biostatistics in order to be able to process experimental data and to perform a critical analysis of data from the literature
  • PROFESSIONAL SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED

    • Be able to conduct a research project on a biological question using a multidisciplinary, quantitative and integrated approach.
    • Be able to utilize knowledge in several disciplinary fields in order to understand the molecular processes that govern the development and function of living organisms, and understand how their deregulation can lead to the emergence of pathologies.
    • Be able to implement an innovative and multidisciplinary experimental approach, with the most recent techniques, to dissect the molecular mechanisms that control the development and physiology of eukaryotes, using model organisms
    • Possess the linguistic knowledge and writing methods to design, produce and present the results of a research project or a bibliographic study in English and in French
    • Design, formalize and carry out a research project to provide answers to a previously well-defined biological question
  • INTERNSHIPS AND SUPERVISED PROJECTS

The BIP Master student will complete two internships, one in M1 and the other in M2.

  • SUPPORT FOR YOUR LABOR MARKET INTEGRATION

So-called professionalising teaching units will be offered to students.

  • SUPPORT FOR YOUR STUDIES ABROAD

The second year of the master will be taught in English.
