The image professions

List of activities covered by the diploma

At the end of the course, the student will have acquired the technical and scientific knowledge, as well as a cinematographic culture that will enable him/her to carry out the functions of: multi-camera cameraman, second assistant film cameraman, documentary cameraman, scientific camera operator, and on short films: first assistant cameraman, cameraman and director of photography. He/she will have the following knowledge and skills

• ability to set up a multi-camera shoot
• ability to compose a frame, mastery of the aesthetic and dramaturgical effects of framing in fiction and documentary
• ability to design and produce the lighting for a fiction or documentary film, technical and artistic direction of the lighting

• good visual culture, foundations of narrative forms and film editing to imagine the representation of an action in time and space, and its cutting,
• in-depth theoretical and technical knowledge of photography, optics and photographic chemistry
• basic knowledge of sensitometry (response of silver media to light conditions), notions of laboratory techniques.

The technological evolution of the equipment used requires a constant updating of knowledge (development of High Definition video, for example).

The sound and image professions

At the end of the course, the student will have acquired the technical and scientific knowledge as well as a cinematographic culture that will enable him/her to carry out the functions of sound assistant on a cinema shoot, chief sound operator in video and cinema on a short film or a feature film in documentary or fiction, sound editor or assistant mixer on television or cinema projects.

He/she will have the following knowledge and skills

• ability to set up a sound recording system quickly and independently,
• ability to supervise a team as a sound operator on a television or film set in documentary or fiction,
• Ability to set up a multi-camera shooting system,
• Ability to adapt to the conditions of the report, in a reduced team and assuming responsibility for the sound.
• mastery of the operation and use of a workstation (with significant resources) in a complex environment, including the possibility (with an "i") of mixing in surround or 5.1,
• ability to use an analog control room including: console, effects, multitrack and dual track tape recorder (analog or digital)
• in-depth knowledge of image-sound interactions,
• ability to understand an author's or director's intentions and to transcribe them in terms of sound proposals,
• ability to establish a list of equipment to respond to different situations,
• ability to communicate (dialogue, telephone, MSN or e-mail) in a work group and to develop a concerted approach.

Skills or abilities assessed

• General knowledge: a good level of mathematics and physics.
• Specific knowledge: a good auditory culture, a good knowledge of English technical vocabulary specific to the audio and audiovisual field, an interest in and knowledge of computer systems and their evolution.
• Specific skills: mastery of tools (microphones, mixers, analogue and digital tape recorders, analogue and digital mixing desks) and complex technical environments (digital audio workstations, editing editors, control surfaces).
• Good knowledge of the procedures and methods of the production and post-production chain (workflow).

The editing professions

List of activities targeted by the diploma

At the end of the course, students will be able to work on television, documentary or cinema fiction editing. They will have a thorough knowledge of AVID and Final Cut Pro software, import-export procedures for audio, video and FLEX data, synchronization of sound and image, and editing on a 16/35mm cinema table. Compositing and colorimetry are approached quickly but allow students to know the software environments (Photoshop, After Effects, Combustion).

An orientation towards the profession of scriptwriter is possible.

Personal qualities: a multi-faceted approach (musical, plastic, but also commercial) to editing requires a great deal of open-mindedness and a strong sense of interpersonal skills to overcome this crucial phase in the life of the film. The editor, who has most often not been present at the shooting, is undoubtedly the technician whose vision is most important in the finished project, but it is also on him that a large part of the success or failure of the film rests.

Skills: good physical ability, listening skills combined with the ability to read and critically analyse images, sounds, acting and music, good resistance to stress, a highly developed sense of logic and organisation.

Skills or abilities assessed

General knowledge: a good level in the history of film and audiovisual forms, but also in literary, visual and musical history.

Specific knowledge: knowledge of the different forms of editing (dialectical, transparent, experimental) and narration, English technical vocabulary specific to the field of editing, an interest in and knowledge of technical systems and their evolution (current systems and permanent curiosity about ongoing technological transformations).

The production professions

List of activities covered by the diploma

The professions of directing and production methods cover different realities, depending on the genre (fiction, documentary, institutional, corporate, scientific, medical, advertising, video, etc.) and the distribution system (cinema, television, Internet, DVD, museum installations, etc.). To respond to these realities, the training focuses on the acquisition of cross-disciplinary skills and firmly rejects the stereotype of the author-director locked into an egotistical approach. To be an assistant director, scriptwriter, stage manager or production assistant, one must therefore acquire the following skills and know-how

• elaboration of the complete analysis of a project
• development of a work plan based on this initial analysis, taking into account the artistic requirements of the project and the economic constraints set out by the production
• timing
• processing of the preceding information on an Excel-type spreadsheet
• knowledge of control room procedures, filming authorizations, management of equipment in a complete team
• elaboration of the cut
• knowledge of the shooting process
• appreciation of the work of each person
• budget management

Skills or abilities assessed

• General knowledge: image grammar, audiovisual professions, tasks, constraints and concerns of each person involved in a project.
• Specific knowledge: equipment of each corporation, professional environments, risk management, safety (identification and prevention, electricity, authorisations, etc.), computer equipment and connections.
• Specific skills: writing and analysing a scenario, a technical breakdown, a work plan, a development or implementation estimate; managing a budget; estimating the time needed to complete a task; using a spreadsheet, a word processor, a database manager, if possible a dedicated software (MovieMagic, MovieBase).

Music for the image

At the end of the course, the student will have invested the rather large field of the relation between music (musics) and images whether they are fixed or animated, linear or interactive, broadcasted by hertzian or wired voices or projected locally within the framework of an installation or even a show. He/she will have acquired the technical and scientific knowledge necessary to master computer tools, as well as a cinematographic culture. He will be able to :

• Compose a musical work from a scenario or from a work already produced
• Use and modify an existing musical work to adapt it to audiovisual constraints
• Experiment with various styles of musical creation for the image, applied to different media
• Dialogue with an author, a scriptwriter, a designer, a director, an editor, a mixer...

He will have the following knowledge and skills:

• Ability to set up a sound recording device quickly and independently,
• Ability to set up a multi-camera shooting system,
• Mastery of the operation and use of a workstation (with significant resources) in a complex environment including the possibility of mixing in surround or 5.1,
• Ability to operate an analog control room including: console, effects, multitrack and two-track tape recorder (analog or digital),
• Ability to understand the intentions of an author or director and ability to transcribe them in terms of musical and sound proposals,
• Ability to establish a list of material to respond to different situations, Ability to communicate (dialogue, telephone, iphone, MSN or e-mail) in a work group and to develop a concerted approach.

Competences or capacities evaluated :

General knowledge: history of the arts, analysis of the still image (composition...), cinematographic, audiovisual and interactive media culture, culture of audio, radio and experimental works, image editing and its language and knowing how to practice it, the creative and expressive potential of image-sound relations.

Specific knowledge: Knowledge of the basics of fundamental acoustics, file formats and compression standards, the theories of the audio signal, audio-digital, MIDI and the production chain from sound to image (workflow). - To know the tools of MAO (Cubase, Acid...) and their exploitation. Have a first level of knowledge of tools dedicated to interactive arts (Max MSP, Pure Data...).

Specific skills: Follow and analyze a score, conceive an orchestration, realize compositions and respond to a specific request (order), improvise instrumentally and/or vocally for the image, supervise an ensemble of musicians during rehearsal and/or recording sessions or during a performance, integrate noises and ambiences into a musical work or even know how to compose with these elements Performing a film analysis (and in particular knowing how to make an "energetic-rhythmic" reading of narrative events and a "discursive" reading of documentary events.
