AIMS
After a first year in the Louis Pasteur scientific portal, the last two years of the Life and Earth Sciences degree in Biodiversity and Ecology (SVT BIOECO) provide instruction in the biology of organisms and in descriptive and functional ecology. These two disciplines enable students to understand the interactions of organisms with their environment, taking into account the analysis and remediation of natural and anthropogenic disturbances. It offers a diversity of teaching units in ecology, both fundamental and applied and complementary.
The BIOECO course trains future ecologists at a technical level and prepares them mainly for further study at master's level in the fields of ecology, biodiversity and evolution.
TARGETED STUDENTS
Holders of the baccalauréat with scientific specializations
Students from scientific backgrounds (CPGE, BTS, BUT) may be admitted to L2 and L3 upon application
FUNDAMENTAL PREREQUISITES
The BIOECO course is open to all L1 students - having acquired the 60 ECTS - from the Louis Pasteur portal of Aix-Marseille University. For students from other universities, other courses - BTS, DUT, professional licences, CPGE, other courses or for foreign students, an examination of the skills acquired will be carried out by a pedagogical committee after reading the application file.
FUNDAMENTAL PREREQUISITES
Knowledge of the living world, basic cell biology, molecular biology, and chemistry.
LEARNING AND RESEARCH
During the three years, students will be able to participate in internships in research laboratories. These internships, which have a professionalizing character, also allow students to become aware of the world of research, inviting them to continue their studies in this direction.
The teacher-researchers in the BIOECO course mainly carry out their research activities in the IMBE laboratory - Mediterranean Institute of Biodiversity and Marine and Continental Ecology - of Aix-Marseille University.
KNOWLEDGE TO BE ACQUIRED
Mobilize fundamental concepts and practices to identify, analyze and answer questions in life and environmental sciences : analyze the diversity of organisms and their interactions with the environment at different scales (from genes to landscapes).
Mobilize a wide range of knowledge in the context of a specialization
Outline a scientific or professional project in SVT
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED
The skills acquired by the students are both theoretical - knowledge of the structure of ecosystems, fauna and flora, mechanisms of degradation of natural environments and their restoration - and practical. At the end of this SVT degree course, students will be able to
analyse scientific documents, including those in English
to write individual or group reports on case studies;
make a diagnosis of the diversity of present and past organisms at different scales (from genes to communities) and analyse the interactions between living beings and their environments using specific tools in the natural environment or in the laboratory
develop a scientific approach to answer a question by methodically observing natural objects in the field or in the laboratory, and by processing and critically interpreting the data.INTERNSHIPS AND SUPERVISED PROJECTS
Two weeks of internship are foreseen in the 3rd year options, to which the student can add optional weeks of internship.
SPECIFIC TEACHING CONDITIONS
The lectures are illustrated by case studies carried out in the form of tutorials, practical work and field trips (98 h). The acquisition of skills is assessed through continuous assessments, mid-term exams, practical work reports, field trips, oral or written presentations (poster).
The evaluation of skills is carried out throughout the course through an e-portfolio which is evaluated and validated at the end of the third year.
OFFSITE TEACHING
The L2 courses are taught on two sites: Aix-Montperrin and Marseille Saint-Jérôme
The L3 courses are only taught at the Marseille Saint-Jérôme siteSEEKED CAREERS
