On Thursday, December 12, from 12:15 to 1:45 pm, the Faculté des Sciences of Aix-Marseille Université is organizing the event Faim de Sciences, a scientific conference-debate for students!
For this third season, the theme is "The quantum world, an imaginary world?
"
This talk will be led by Thomas DURT, University Professor, Head of the Physics theme group, Quantedu France Project Manager (Quantum Plan), in the presence of:
- Laurent Raymond, Lecturer and Researcher, Head of the Fundamental Physics and Applications Master's program, Deputy Director of the Centre de Physique Théorique (CPT)
- Fabienne Michelini, Lecturer and Researcher, Head of the Nanosciences and nanotechnologies Master's program:
- nano-engineering and quantum devicesJean-Louis
- Lazzari, Researcher at the Centre Interdisciplinaire de Nanoscience de Marseille (CINaM)
- Romain Dubessy, University Professor, Member of the Ion Confinement and Laser Manipulation (CIML) team at the PIIM laboratory
- Hachem Kadri, Senior Lecturer amU Computer Science Lecturer-Researcher, Head of the LIS Science and Data Division.
The world around us is governed by the laws of quantum mechanics. Without this theory, whose concepts are accessible to undergraduates, we would be unable to explain phenomena as fundamental as the stability of matter. For example, it would be impossible to pinpoint our position on Earth on a scale of a few hundred meters. Similarly, the creation of smartphones would never have been possible without a quantum description of semiconductors.
While quantum mechanics has enabled enormous technological advances, it still raises many fascinating questions: for every decision made in our universe, do other choices emerge in parallel universes? What does quantum teleportation really mean? Is the quantum computer about to revolutionize our world, and at what cost?
From its fundamental principles to current issues, this lecture will show you that, far from being an abstraction far removed from reality, quantum mechanics is an essential tool for understanding the world and paving the way for new scientific and technological advances.
To prepare for the conference and arouse your curiosity, we invite you to take part in our interactive questionnaire on Wooclap before the event: https:
