Pedagogy

  • AIMS

    The objective is to offer a specialised training in immunology, which is both readable and differentiated. The aim is to prepare the actors of tomorrow's fundamental and applied immunology to better understand, predict and manipulate the immune system. The demonstration of the therapeutic efficacy of immunomodulators in inflammatory diseases and cancers opens up huge opportunities in basic and applied research for the next 20 years. Today, the need for knowledge in immunology is becoming a necessity to understand the pathophysiology of many inflammatory, metabolic, genetic and cancer diseases.

    In this context, the master's degree offers a varied teaching which includes the participation of researchers from the major laboratories in Marseille, an opening onto clinical immunology and the health sector, a partnership with the POLYTECH engineering school, and the contribution of local companies in biotechnology, diagnostics and biopharmacy.

  • TARGETED STUDENTS

    • The Master's degree is aimed at students who have obtained a Licence SV in France or equivalent abroad, and who have acquired a solid grounding in Cell Biology, Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry, as well as validating an updated L3 level teaching module in the basics of cellular and molecular immunology.
    • It forms the basis for teaching in years 4 and 5 of AMU's CMI (cursus master en ingéniérie) course in immunology.
    • It welcomes students from the POLYTECH engineering school (4th and 5th years) for validation of a double degree, or doctors/pharmacists who have taken theoretical courses in molecular and cellular immunology and wish to specialize in immuno-intervention.
  • STRUCTURE AND ORGANISATION

    • The mention proposes only one course aiming at bringing future professionals of scientific research (research) towards the doctorate, and preparing young graduates in immunotechnology operating for public laboratories or companies of the diagnosis and pharmacy (engineers).
    • Teaching in M1 is in French, teaching in M2 is in English.
  • KNOWLEDGE TO BE ACQUIRED

    This course provides instruction in the fundamental foundations of immunology at the cellular and molecular level, and the dynamics of the immune system in physiological responses and in infectious and pathological situations. The aim is to learn about immunology in all its states through different levels of analysis (from the molecule to the organism) and multiple models (from animals to humans). The aim is to prepare students for doctoral studies and to provide a solid practical training for specialists in immunotechnology. A large place is given to diagnostic and therapeutic tools from immunology. Learning is also strongly focused on the engineering of monoclonal antibodies and their clinical application, a major issue of immuno-intervention in the treatment of many diseases (inflammatory diseases, autoimmune diseases, cancer) and a strong point of the Marseille « Immunology » cluster.

  • PROFESSIONAL SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED

    • Analyze, understand and manipulate the immune system using knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry and pathophysiology.
    • Produce a reasoned and quantitative scientific approach to answer a scientific question
    • Propose a reasoned and quantitative experimental scientific procedure to answer a scientific question relating to the study or manipulation of a component of the immune system.
    • Produce written reports and present them orally in accordance with the expected method and format, have a good command of reading and understanding of scientific English.
    • &Develop a project based on a problem or question related to immunology, arguing its relevance and feasibility, and propose an innovative result.
    • Propose an intuitive or analytical exploratory methodology of an immunological state or phase observed on a living system by relying on disciplinary knowledge and diagnostic tools, in a research, remediation or production process.
  • INTERNSHIPS AND SUPERVISED PROJECTS

    The master offers fundamental and experimental UEs in the form of tutored projects.

    The M1 includes an internship of initiation à research (8 weeks). In M2, the choice of internship (5 months) allows the student to orientate his training towards Research (public laboratory) or Engineering (company).

  • SUPPORT FOR YOUR ACADEMIC CHOICES

    The student of the master is largely confronted with the professional environment as well in the field of fundamental research as in the academic technical platforms, and the biotechnology companies in the field of the diagnostic or pharmaceutical industry. UE in tutorial project or research/industry workshops accompany the student in his choice of professional orientation.

  • SUPPORT FOR YOUR LABOR MARKET INTEGRATION

    • The master's degree enables students to pursue a thesis in immunology.
    • Master's graduates are recruited for jobs as assistant engineers/engineers in laboratories and companies.
    • company visits are organized.
    • A network of Master's graduates has been set up.
    • The university offers job search assistance workshops (SUIO).
  • SUPPORT FOR YOUR STUDIES ABROAD

    • M2 internships are available abroad.
    • International mobility is also possible in M1, in the form of a summer internship between M1 and M2.
    • M2 courses are taught in English, and students are exposed to scientific seminars in English.
    • The Master's program is open to international students (Erasmus, Etudes-en-France, other, etc.)..
