Information on internships

Academic year 2020-2021

If the mission entrusted to the trainee cannot be carried out remotely, the face-to-face internship can be carried out, knowing that it is well mentioned in the initial internship agreement that:

"The host organization and the student (or the different parties) undertake to comply with all recommendations and/or measures in force prescribed by the competent authorities regarding the control of the COVID-19 epidemic.

The trainee undertakes to report any malfunction in terms of health and safety to his/her host organization AND his/her higher education institution."

The student is then allowed to travel between home and the internship location with a completed and signed proof of business travel from the host organization, his or her internship agreement, and an ID.

Otherwise, the transformation of the "face-to-face internship" into a "distance internship" or its interruption / postponement must be formalized by an amendment (outgoing internship amendment and incoming internship amendment) to the initial internship agreement.

International internships in semester 2

  • Face-to-face internships outside the European Union are prohibited. Except for foreign students, in their country of origin (where the student lived before enrolling at AMU. Documents to be attached to the SDF application)
  • Mobility within the European Union, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland is authorised subject to the SDF's opinion, but is not recommended.
  • Mobility to overseas departments and regions and overseas collectivities (DROM-COM) is also forbidden for the 2nd semester 2020/21.
  • Internships carried out remotely with a host organization abroad are authorized (also specifying the student's home as the location of the internship).

Previous situation, academic year 2019-2020

Some basic rules to better understand :

  • Since the beginning of the lockdown, if the internship could not be teleworked, it had to be terminated (or suspended) except, by exception, internships contributing to the fight against COVID 19.
  • Telework is considered as "normal" work.
  • In the context of an apprenticeship or a professional contract, the student is employed by the company and is therefore subject to the rules of the company-employer like any other employee. You will find here an FAQ on apprenticeships produced by the Ministry of Labour.
  • It is possible to adapt to the situation of each traineeship, within reasonable limits: for example it may be acceptable to shorten a traineeship from 4 months to 3 months, but to go from 4 months to only 1 month would be too short.
  • 1. Internships that can take place almost unchanged

(e.g. teleworking, research that can be done remotely because it is very theoretical)

The internships can continue (or start) under almost normal circumstances, but an amendment to the agreement must be signed. You will find attached the administrative procedure adapted to the request for a rider.

  • 2. Internships that need to be substantially modified

Placement not accessible and telecommuting not possible - e.g. placement abroad, or experimental placement in lab, or company closed.

    • It may be possible to postpone the internship after June 2, the student must be willing to join the company and the company must be committed to ensuring compliance with health regulations.
    • Consideration may be given to replacing the internship with another internship, which would be possible (telecommuting...),
    • We can consider replacing the course by a course with a strong bibliography orientation (either on the same subject, as an adaptation of the same course, or on another subject)
    • We can consider mixing these solutions,
    • Other solutions to be invented if necessary

The aim of all this: we must avoid having to waive the internship, and we must validate the internship if it has provided the fundamental skills of the degree. For example, in the same master's degree, in normal circumstances, experimental internships and theoretical internships coexist without any problem to validate the diploma.

It is necessary to make a rider of convention of training course to stop or postpone or modify the training course. or a new convention if change of training course.

    Various questions

The possibility of having split juries if all the internships do not end at the same time is being discussed.

Payment of bonuses for postponed, shifted or cancelled internships... the situation is not simple and is under discussion.

  • 3. Internships abroad

If the internship has not started: prohibition of departure for all students planning to move abroad and advice to return as far as possible for students currently abroad.

If the internship has begun: the choice to interrupt an internship abroad and return to France is to be made by the student. AMU strongly recommends returning to France as soon as possible because of

    • the uncertainty linked to the evolution of the health situation in the coming weeks in all regions of the world
    • the uncertainty linked to the continuity of international transport and the real possibility of being "blocked" in the host country. No disciplinary, pedagogical or financial sanction (scholarship deduction) will be implemented.
  • 4. Extension of the academic year

The 2019-2020 academic year is likely to be extended to December 31, 2020 to allow students to complete their internship. The modalities are under discussion. We will keep you informed as soon as possible.
